A touch-screen app that guides athletes and patients through rotator cuff training

The Challenge

NuShoulder makes a machine for rotator cuff training, used by university and professional athletes and by physical therapy clinics. Each exercise has to be done at a set weight and in the right way: for a number of reps (isotonic) or held for a set time (isometric).

NuShoulder had built the machine and wired it to a touch-screen PC and controller. It needed software that people could use on their own: easy enough for a patient after surgery, polished enough for a professional athlete, and able to record every session.

What We Built

We built a Windows kiosk app in .NET MAUI that runs on the machine’s PC. It starts when the machine is switched on, so users only ever see the app.

A step-by-step setup checklist positions the user and the machine before each exercise, with images and tips, and a video plays while the user does it. Users set the weight and seat height on the touch screen, and the app logs each set’s weight, reps and duration for the right and left arm. A hidden admin panel lets installers set the machine up for athletes or clinics and calibrate it at each site. The first release, in 2022-2023, went out with the machines sold to universities and professional athletes.

In 2025-2026 we added isometric training, with a live force gauge and timed holds, user profiles (users sign up on their phone and sign in at the machine with their mobile number), phone notifications, and syncing with NuShoulder’s cloud API. Sessions are saved on the PC and uploaded when it’s online.
